Camper trailer FAQs
How much does a camper trailer cost in Australia?+
120 camper trailers on our site have a published starting price. Those prices run from $12,750 to $385,000, and half start at $32,990 or less. Those are the makers' own starting prices for the base build, before options and on-road costs. Figures are the manufacturers' own published specifications.
What is a camper trailer?+
A camper trailer is a small towed trailer that unfolds at camp into a bed and living space. Some fold out into a canvas tent, some lift a hard lid, and some are a small teardrop shell. 83 of the 134 on our site have an outdoor kitchen listed by their maker. It sits lower and usually weighs less than a caravan, so more cars can tow one.
What is the difference between a camper trailer and a hybrid caravan?+
A hybrid caravan is a small hard-walled van with the bed, and often a shower, inside it. A camper trailer usually sets up at camp, with the bed in a tent or under a lid and the kitchen outside. Half the camper trailers on our site have an ATM of 1,925kg or less. For hybrids that halfway figure is 3,000kg.
How heavy is a camper trailer?+
The camper trailers on our site have a tare (empty weight) from 350kg to 3,200kg, and half weigh 1,160kg or less empty. Their ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass), the most each may weigh loaded, runs from 538kg to 4,000kg. Published ball weights run from 20kg to 230kg.
What car do I need to tow a camper trailer?+
86 of the 118 camper trailers with a published ATM are rated at 2,000kg or less. Your car's braked towing capacity has to cover the trailer's ATM, and its towball limit has to cover the ball weight. Your car's GCM (gross combination mass) can cut that further once the car is loaded. Our free tow calculator does that arithmetic for your exact car.
Does a camper trailer need brakes?+
In Australia a trailer over 750kg GTM (Gross Trailer Mass) must have working brakes. Over 2,000kg GTM, it needs brakes on every wheel and a breakaway system. Electric brakes need a brake controller in the car at any weight over 750kg GTM. Our brake controller guide sets out what that means for the trailer you pick.
Which camper trailers have an ensuite?+
These camper trailers have an ensuite listed by their maker: Breath Trailer Breath Max, Austrack Campers Stockton XE, Bruder ADX-21, Bruder EXP-7, Bruder EXP-8 and Bruder EXP-10. Open a model to see its layout.
Which camper trailers have air conditioning?+
These camper trailers have air conditioning listed by their maker: Austrack Campers Plenty-X Double Folding, JAWA Off Road Campers Ridge Runner, Austrack Campers Stockton X3, Austrack Campers Stockton X7, Austrack Campers Stockton XE, Stockman Rover Ultra, Bruder ADX-21, Bruder EXP-7, Bruder EXP-8 and Bruder EXP-10. Check whether it is standard or an option on the model you want.
How do I check a used camper trailer before I buy it?+
Run a PPSR (Personal Property Securities Register) check on its VIN before you pay. It shows whether a loan is recorded against the trailer, plus any stolen or written-off flags the state road authorities hold. Our PPSR guide shows which number to search.
