Hybrid caravan FAQs

What is a hybrid caravan?+

A hybrid sits between a camper trailer and a full caravan: hard-walled but lower-profile (often with a pop-top roof), lighter and narrower than a full-height van, and usually built with genuine off-road running gear. You trade interior volume for towability and track access.

Are hybrid caravans lighter than normal caravans?+

Usually, but not always — the off-road hardware adds back some of what the smaller body saves. Hybrids we track run roughly 2,000–3,000kg ATM, against a market median around 3,200kg. Always check the specific model's ATM rather than assuming.

Why are hybrid caravans so expensive for their size?+

You're paying for the build, not the floorspace: off-road chassis and suspension, composite panels, and serious off-grid electrical packages are standard in this category. Cost per square metre is high; cost per remote campsite reached is the better metric.

Who should buy a hybrid instead of a full caravan?+

Couples (or small families) who prioritise where they can camp over how palatial it feels when they get there — tight bush tracks, soft sand, and free camps where a 22-footer won't fit. If you mostly stay in caravan parks, a full-height van is more space for less money.
