The real answer, by caravan type

We track 118 caravan ranges with a published manufacturer starting price. Here's what each type actually starts at, and what the typical (median) range in each type asks. Another 62 checked ranges are price-on-application — we leave those out of every number here rather than guess.

All figures are manufacturer "from" prices for the base model, before options and on-road costs. Drive-away, expect to pay $2,000+ more, and more again once you tick options boxes. The cheapest van in our data right now is the Avan Campers Caravans & Motorhomes Ray Pop Top at $35,000.

What actually moves the price

Two vans the same length can be $80,000 apart. It's rarely badge snobbery — it's usually one of these four things.

Off-road capability

Heavier chassis, independent suspension, more clearance, bigger water and battery capacity. It's the single biggest price lever in the market — and wasted money if the van never leaves sealed roads.

Construction

Timber-frame with aluminium cladding is the budget end; composite panels and full aluminium or galvanised frames cost more up front and generally hold up better. You pay for what's behind the walls, not the walls.

Size and berths

Every extra foot of van is more chassis, more cladding, more furniture and more weight. Family bunk layouts cost more than couples layouts of the same spec, and need a bigger tow vehicle too.

Options packs

The "from" price buys the base spec. Solar upgrades, lithium batteries, washing machines, air conditioning and off-grid packs can add five figures before you notice. Get every option priced in writing.

The costs that keep coming after you buy

The purchase price is the big number, but it's not the last one. Budget for these before you sign, not after.

  • On-road costs (at purchase): dealer delivery and initial registration can add $2,000 or more to the sticker price. Always compare drive-away quotes, not list prices.
  • Registration (annual): set by your state or territory and calculated differently in each — some charge by weight. There's no single national figure, so check your state's transport authority rather than trusting a round number off a blog.
  • Insurance: typically $800–$1,500 per year depending on the van's value. Have it active before the drive home — statistically the riskiest tow you'll ever do with it.
  • Servicing: an annual bearings and brake service runs $300–$500. Skipping it is how cheap vans become expensive ones.
  • One-off extras: an electric brake controller (around $600) is legally required for most vans if your tow vehicle doesn't have one, towing mirrors are about $150, and then there's hoses, cords and levelling gear.

Depreciation: the cost nobody puts on the brochure

Caravans depreciate like cars: the steepest drop happens in the first couple of years, then the curve flattens out. How hard it bites depends on the brand's reputation, how the van's been kept, and where the market is when you sell — so treat anyone quoting you an exact percentage with suspicion, including us if we ever did.

There are two ways to be on the right side of that curve: buy a van you'll keep long enough that the early drop stops mattering, or buy used and let the first owner absorb it. If the second option appeals, our used-buying guide covers what to inspect, what paperwork to demand and where the traps are.

What does that look like per week?

Most buyers don't pay cash, so the number that matters is the weekly repayment, not the sticker. A $109,990 van means a very different conversation at 5 years versus 7, and with or without a deposit — our free calculator turns any price on this site into a weekly figure so you can see what actually fits your budget.

Common Questions

How much does a caravan cost in Australia?

Based on the 118 Australian caravan ranges we track with a published manufacturer starting price, new caravans run from $35,000 to $267,000, with a median starting price of $109,990. Those are base-model "from" prices before options and on-road costs, so a realistic drive-away figure sits a few thousand dollars higher.

What is the cheapest new caravan in Australia?

The cheapest checked range on this site with a published price is the Avan Campers Caravans & Motorhomes Ray Pop Top at $35,000 (a pop-top). That's the manufacturer's base starting price — options and on-road costs come on top.

Do caravan prices include on-road costs and options?

No. Every figure on this page is a manufacturer's published starting price for the base spec, excluding government charges, dealer delivery and options. On-road costs alone can add $2,000 or more, and popular options packs add plenty more again. Use these numbers to compare brands like-for-like, then get a drive-away quote before you commit.

How much does a caravan cost to register?

Registration is set by each state and territory, and most calculate it differently — some by weight, some flat-rate — so there's no single national figure and we're not going to invent one. Check your state's transport authority for the exact amount. Budget for it annually alongside insurance (typically $800–$1,500 per year) and an annual bearings and brake service ($300–$500).

How much does a caravan depreciate?

Like cars, caravans lose value fastest in the first couple of years, then the curve flattens out. Exactly how much depends on brand reputation, condition and how the market is running when you sell. The practical takeaway: if the first-owner drop bothers you, buy a well-kept used van and let someone else absorb it.

How much more does an off-road caravan cost?

In our data, full off-road ranges have a median starting price of $127,000 across 42 ranges, versus $78,658 across 23 on-road tourer ranges. The gap pays for heavier chassis, off-road suspension, better clearance and more self-sufficiency — worth it if you'll actually leave the bitumen, dead money if you won't.

Why isn't every caravan brand included in these prices?

We only count ranges our team has checked, and only those with a published price. Another 62 checked ranges are price-on-application, and we leave them out of the averages rather than guess. If a manufacturer won't publish a price, we won't invent one.
