About Made by Smidge
Made by Smidge builds compact campers at Thornleigh in Sydney's north and sells them from the showroom there. The line-up is the Breeze teardrop trailer, the Anvil squaredrop trailer and the Long Weekend 4x4 motorhome on a HiLux or Ranger chassis. Both trailers come in under 1,200kg fully loaded, so a hatchback can tow the Breeze and a mid-size SUV the Anvil. The Breeze and Anvil each carry a three-year warranty. Made by Smidge is part of the Suncamper group and builds in collaboration with Suncamper Motorhomes.

Anvil
The Anvil is a squaredrop camper trailer for a couple who want to take a light trailer onto rough tracks. At 850kg tare a mid-size SUV can tow it, and Smidge has tested it on Blue Rag Range in the Victorian High Country. Smidge publishes an 850kg tare and a 1,200kg maximum loaded mass, which it labels GVM (gross vehicle mass). That leaves about 350kg of payload. Smidge says most mid-size SUVs and all four-wheel drives rated to tow 1,200kg or more can pull it. The squared roofline adds headroom throughout compared with the Breeze teardrop. Two adults sleep in a queen-size bed, 1830mm by 2020mm, on a high-density foam mattress, with wardrobe cabinets at the foot. It carries no toilet or shower. The rear hatch opens onto a galley for cooking in the open air. It holds a two-burner gas stove with grill, a stainless steel sink with hand-pump tap, a laminate bench, a pantry cupboard and a cutlery drawer. The 55 litre 12V fridge-freezer sits in the front toolbox rather than the galley. Power comes from a 120Ah AGM battery, a 130W roof solar panel and DC-DC charging from the tow car. Fresh water runs to 80 litres. Options include a grey water tank, a second water tank, a 2000W inverter, a lithium battery upgrade, air conditioning, a rooftop tent and side windows. Benchtop and timber finishes come in five choices each at no extra cost. The body is composite panels over an aluminium frame, with fibreglass exterior panels and a one-piece fibreglass roof. The floor is marine plywood with a waterproofing membrane. It rides on a fully welded painted steel chassis with leaf spring suspension, 265/75 R16 off-road tyres, mechanical disc brakes and a full-articulation off-road coupling. Electric brakes are an option. Every Anvil carries a three-year warranty and meets Australian Design Rules. Smidge finishes and quality-checks it at its Thornleigh facility in Sydney's north, and sells it from the showroom there.
Breeze
The Breeze is a 590kg teardrop camper trailer for a couple, light enough for a hatchback, a small SUV or an electric car to tow. Smidge builds it at Thornleigh in Sydney's north and sells it from the showroom there. Smidge publishes a 590kg tare and a 1,000kg maximum loaded mass, which it labels GVM (gross vehicle mass). That leaves about 410kg of payload for water, gas, food and gear. Smidge says any car rated to tow 1,000kg or more can pull it. Two adults sleep in a queen-size bed, 1830mm by 1880mm, on a high-density foam mattress. The sleeping cabin has LED lighting, dual USB charging ports, block-out curtains and wardrobe cabinets at the foot of the bed. It carries no toilet or shower. The rear hatch lifts to open a galley kitchen for cooking in the open air. The galley holds a two-burner gas stove with grill and a stainless steel sink with a hand-pump tap. A laminate bench, a pantry cupboard, a shelf and a cutlery drawer complete it. A 55 litre 12V fridge-freezer slides out from the rear. Power comes from a 120Ah AGM battery, topped up by a 100W roof solar panel and DC-DC charging from the tow car while driving. Fresh water runs to 80 litres in a food-grade tank. A 2000W inverter, 240V shore power, a lithium battery upgrade, an external shower and a 3m awning are among the options, each priced separately. The body is composite with no timber frame, built from fibreglass panels under a one-piece fibreglass roof with no joins. The floor is marine plywood with a waterproofing membrane. It rides on a fully welded painted steel chassis with leaf spring suspension, 265/75 R16 off-road tyres and a spare wheel. Braking is mechanical disc, with electric brakes as an option, and the coupling is a full-articulation off-road unit on a 50mm ball. Smidge rates it for unsealed roads and gravel tracks, and points buyers headed for serious four-wheel drive terrain to the Anvil. Every Breeze carries a three-year warranty and meets Australian Design Rules. Smidge says it completes all construction at its Thornleigh facility.
Long Weekend
The Long Weekend is a compact 4x4 motorhome on a Toyota HiLux or Ford Ranger chassis, sleeping four and parking in a standard car space. It drives on a standard car licence. It measures 5.8m long, 2.1m wide and 3.25m high. The base vehicle is a HiLux Workmate diesel or a Ranger XL diesel, both four-wheel drive. Smidge publishes a tare of about 2,800kg against a 3,500kg GVM (gross vehicle mass), for a payload of about 700kg. A GVM upgrade with a suspension upgrade is available, and Smidge rates the optional removable tow bar to 1,500kg. The main bed is an over-cab double under a skylight, on a foam mattress with an innerspring upgrade available. A rear dinette with panoramic windows converts to a second double. Ceiling height is 2m. A wet bathroom behind a door combines a shower with a cassette toilet on an 18 litre cassette tank. The kitchen sink serves as the handbasin. The kitchen has a cooktop with rangehood, a microwave, a recessed sink with mixer tap and a 12V compressor fridge, on a laminate benchtop. Full-length overhead lockers run both sides, with a dedicated wardrobe and underseat storage at the rear. Every window has a flyscreen, block-out blinds and curtains, and a central opening hatch skylight is standard. Cabinetry is marine-grade plywood in a light or dark timber finish, over vinyl flooring. Power is a 240V and 12V dual system with a 120Ah AGM battery and a 100W solar panel. Fresh water runs to 86 litres and grey water to 43 litres, with storage for two gas bottles. Air conditioning, diesel heating, an inverter, a reversing camera, a TV and an external shower are all optional extras. The body is an aluminium frame with insulated fibreglass panels, fully insulated throughout. Smidge says all chassis work and finishing happens at its Thornleigh facility in Sydney's north. On its About page it adds that its manufacturing partners complete the bulk of the build overseas before shipping to Australia. Smidge sells it from the Thornleigh showroom with a 10 per cent deposit to order. Build turnaround is three months or under unless stock is available, and Smidge quotes delivery separately. It comes in one exterior finish with orange city decals.
