Trakkadu

The Trakka Trakkadu is a pop-top campervan, 5.45 metres long, on a Ford Transit Custom or Volkswagen Transporter. It sleeps two, or four with the optional roof bed, and seats five. A 48 volt lithium power system, 390 watts of solar and 4,000 watts of 240 volt output are standard.

Who does it sleep?

• Main bed: a 1.92 by 1.2 metre double, from a bed and seat system that runs the length of the interior.
• Roof bed: an option, 1.92 by 1.23 metres.
• Seats: five, or six as an option.
• Child seat anchor points: two, or three as an option.

Inside

You choose between two door layouts. One has a single sliding door on the passenger side, with a full-length cabinet. The other has sliding doors on both sides at no extra cost, and you can reach the fridge from inside and out.

• Cooking: a dual induction cooktop. A convection and steam oven is an option.
• Fridge: a 90 litre 12 volt compressor fridge and freezer.
• Kitchen: a stainless steel sink and soft-close drawers.
• Table: an indoor and outdoor table.
• Storage: roller shutter doors and a shelved wardrobe at the rear.
• Windows: opening glass windows with insect screens and blinds.
• Lighting: LED light panels with dimmers.

The roof

The pop-top lifts electrically at the touch of a button or a remote. It is a low-profile aluminium and fibreglass composite, insulated, with a thermal break and acoustic lining. The roof sleeve opens on three sides, 270 degrees, with midge mesh all round. Roof bars are standard, and a three-bar rack rated to 50kg is an option.

Power and water

• Battery: a 2.05kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, equal to 160 amp hours at 12 volts. A 5.12kWh battery is an option.
• Solar: 390 watts on the roof, with 520 and 650 watt options.
• Charging: 240 volt mains, and a DC to DC charger while you drive.
• Monitoring: power and water levels on a screen and in a phone app.
• Fresh water: a 60 litre tank.
• Grey water: a 30 litre tank with an electronic dump valve.
• Hot water: a 10 litre tank, with a 1,600 watt electric water heater as an option.

Diesel or 2,000 watt electric heating and 1,800 watt electric cooling are options. An electric awning, 3 by 2.5 metres, is an option on either side.

Driving and specs

• Base vehicles: Ford Transit Custom 2WD, Ford Transit Custom Trail AWD, or Volkswagen Transporter 4Motion AWD.
• Engine: a 2 litre turbo diesel, 125kW and 390Nm, with an 8-speed automatic.
• GVM (gross vehicle mass): 3,225kg, the most it can weigh on the road, fully loaded.
• Length: 5.45 metres.
• Height: 2.08 metres, plus 30mm with a lift kit and 20mm with all-terrain tyres.
• Width: 2.03 metres on the Ford, 2.02 metres on the Volkswagen.
• Fuel: a 70 litre tank.

How to buy

Trakka sells direct from its showroom at 9 Beaumont Road, Mt Kuring-Gai, NSW. Trakka recommends booking an appointment, and interstate buyers can ask for a video tour. Prices start at $142,900 for the Ford 2WD, excluding on-road costs. The Ford Trail AWD is $148,400 and the Volkswagen 4Motion is $161,000, also excluding on-road costs. Trakka takes a $10,000 deposit to hold a base vehicle and a production place, and says it is fully refundable.
