About the Xpedition

The Leader Xpedition is an off-road caravan built in Victoria, in layouts from 14 feet 6 inches to 25 feet. Leader builds its chassis in-house and welds it, with independent suspension and a DO35 off-road hitch. The model page says it sleeps up to six.

Who does it sleep?

It comes in three groups of floor plans.

  • Off-road: seven layouts for couples, including two single-axle vans of 14 feet 6 inches and 15 feet 6 inches.
  • Family: nine layouts with bunks, up to 25 feet.
  • Tourer: five layouts for couples.

Off-road build

  • Chassis: a 6 inch box section, with the A-frame extended to the spring hangers plus a 300mm front extension.
  • Suspension: independent, with an axle riser.
  • Hitch: a DO35 off-road coupling.
  • Wheels: 16 inch RKC Ammo alloys.
  • Protection: a stone guard, checkerplate on the front, rear and sides, and checkerplate over the water tanks.
  • Lighting: an LED light bar and five annexe lights.
  • Extras: a toolbox and a jerry can holder.

Power

  • Solar: three roof-mounted panels.
  • Charging: a Redarc Manager 30 with a built-in DC-DC charger and a RedVision display screen.
  • Batteries: lithium, with a lithium-compatible battery management system.
  • Inverter: optional.

Kitchen, bathroom and comfort

  • Kitchen: a three-gas, one-electric cooktop, a full oven with grill, a 23 litre microwave and a vented rangehood.
  • Fridge: a Thetford 188 litre double-door compressor fridge.
  • Hot water: an Endless instant gas hot water system.
  • Bathroom: a one-piece moulded shower, a ceramic swivel toilet and a ceramic basin.
  • Laundry: a washing machine in layouts that fit one.
  • Climate: a reverse cycle air conditioner, with a diesel heater as an option.
  • Windows: double glazed, with a Camec triple-locking main door.

Water and outdoors

  • Water: two fresh water tanks with separate fillers, and a grey water tank.
  • Gas: two gas bottles and a gas bayonet for a barbecue.
  • Outside: a roll-out awning, an external shower, a picnic table, external speakers and a reversing camera.

Warranty

Leader offers a three-year structural warranty across its range.

How to buy

Leader sells through dealers, including the Australian Caravan Centre sites in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. Dealers are also listed in Wagga Wagga, Adelaide, Perth and New Zealand. Ask a dealer for the price, and for the tare and ATM (aggregate trailer mass) of the layout you choose.

Delivery and freight

If there's no dealer in your state, most brands deliver Australia-wide. You can also collect from the factory. Interstate freight is a real cost, often a few thousand dollars, and it climbs with distance, so factor it in before you commit.
